Musicians spend their money on some weird and wonderful pursuits when they’re not doing their job.
There are a lot of popular musicians who are shrouded in controversy. These people tend to be quite rich and you’d expect them to buy mansions, yachts, sports cars and other extravagant things.
Everyone is pretty much used to it by now and we would all like to be in their shoes. But then there are musicians who prefer to spend their fortune in a more unconventional way. Some gather exotic animals for their personal collection.
Others spend their money on gambling and sports betting. Everyone has a thing that’s keeping them entertained it seems. Sometimes it’s a bit bizarre, other times it’s not really what you’d expect.
But one thing is for certain, musical celebrities live a strange life, at least from our point of view. To them, doing crazy things may be completely normal. That being said, here are a few unconventional things musicians love spending money on.
Model trains
A lot of people love toy models and they are quite enthusiastic about it. Some people take it a bit too far. But what is taking it too far, anyway, especially if you love doing something so innocent? The famous singer Sir Rod Stewart loves model trains, for example, and he spends a fortune on his hobby. Can you really blame him?
After all, the man has had a very plentiful and eventful career. Enjoying model trains gives him peace and he’s not willing to hesitate when it comes to pursuing his passion.
As a matter of fact, in 2019, Rod has revealed that he spent his past 26 years building a huge 124-foot long city model inspired by Chicago and New York.
As you might imagine, the model is suited for model trains. You can also imagine how much it would cost to construct such a model. But, hey, if you have an opportunity to invest in something you really enjoy, then you should by all means go for it.
Slot Machines
You’ve probably heard of Lemmy Kilmister, the late front man of the band Motorhead. Lemmy loved to play slot machines. It was his way of getting some “me time” and peace of mind. Lemmy would spend a fortune on slot machines because he would play for hours on end.
It seems he would at least get back some of his investments, but that wasn’t important to Lemmy. The game itself was what mattered the most and he’d lose himself in slots every chance he got. Tom DeLonge, one of the lead vocalists and front man of the band “Blink 182” is one of those people who are very passionate about aliens and UFOs in general. If you think Blink’s song “Aliens Exist” was just a joke, it wasn’t.
Tom is so invested in his passion that he even opened a “To The Stars Academy” and invited other enthusiasts to help him further explore UFOs. Their work even got the attention of the US Government and military so they must be onto something. Mulder and Scully would be proud.
Casino games and sports betting
The famous singer Gladys Knight, also known as “The Empress of Soul”, was famous for her love of gambling and sports betting. Gladys would spend tens of thousands of dollars on her favourite game of Baccarat.
Her love for the game would quickly turn into addiction, which she managed to get rid of with the help from Gamblers Anonymous. Back in the ‘70s, Gladys was a huge fan of sports betting as well.
Her tendency towards betting and gambling ruined many relationships in her life and lost her a fortune. Fortunately for Gladys, she’s back on track now, enjoying her retirement, although she likes to make an appearance whenever she has an opportunity to do so.
