Sydney is adopting a cautious approach with Lance Franklin as he attempts to return to fitness in time for the 2021 season.

Sydney champion Lance Franklin suffered a hamstring injury in May that would keep him on the sidelines for several months.

It was during a training session with the Swans that the 33-year-old sustained his second hamstring issue in as many years.

But despite the severity of the injury, there’s optimism that Franklin can get back to full fitness ahead of the 2021 season. Let’s take a look at his attempt to make a return to the field, as well as analysing what his comeback means for Sydney.

Recovering from a serious hamstring injury

Over the past few years, Franklin has been regularly struck down by injuries. And given his quality, his absence is always a significant loss to the Swans.

In January this year, “Buddy” underwent surgery on his right knee in an effort to tidy up a pre-season knock. It’s still unclear if there’s a correlation between his recent operation and his latest injury.

Because of that, John Longmire’s coaching team is giving him time to return to full fitness.

As per the official AFL website, all players will be back in training by 6 January, which gives Franklin time to finish his rehabilitation period. According to Longmire, the Swans’ priority is to establish a healthy foundation before integrating Franklin back into the demanding running phase.

In the coming months, it’s critical that the Swans don’t rush Franklin back too quickly.

Although it’s perhaps early to suggest that he’s becoming susceptible to injuries as he enters the back end of his career, attempting to maximise his top-level longevity will see him require additional care.

Both player and team are seeking glory

Since their inception, the “Bloods” have enjoyed periods of success. The Swans, or South Melbourne, as they were previously named, have won the premiership five times.

The most recent of those triumphs came back in 2012, following victory over Hawthorn. Interestingly, that contest between the two sides saw the Swans compete against Franklin, who kicked three goals in the Hawks’ defeat.

Throughout the history of the modern-day AFL, the Swans have been one of the competition’s most consistent teams.

Longmire’s team has fallen short of the finals on just five occasions since 1995. Despite finishing 16th last year, there will be optimism that a fully-fit Franklin can take Sydney back to the pinnacle, and end an eight-year drought.

Sydney is currently priced 80/1 with Aussie Rules betting to win the grand final in 2021. To date, Buddy has won two AFL premierships, and will be keen to add another to his collection before hanging up his boots.

The Swans need their talisman back

AFL fans across the globe will be hopeful that Franklin’s current injury run is nothing more than bad luck, as opposed to age catching up with him.

As arguably the best forward of his generation, the sport needs “Buddy” on the field as frequently as possible. Because of this, affording him time to make a full recovery ahead of the 2021 season should be met with widespread applause.
