PORT ADELAIDE 16.14 (110) defeated GEELONG 11.6 (72)
The Cats kicked six goals to two in the opening term but fell apart as their hosts turned up the heat in a third-quarter blitz. Having trailed by 21 points, the Power piled on seven consecutive majors in just 19 minutes to take a stranglehold on the contest. Jeremy Finlayson booted four goals and Todd Marshall three as mid-season recruit Quinton Narkle had an impact on his Port debut against his old side with two goals from 13 touches. Dan Houston (31 disposals, six clearances) and Ollie Wines (28, four) were outstanding. Gary Rohan kicked three goals for Geelong, which lost captain Patrick Dangerfield to injury. The Skipper was taken to hospital with a crack rib and partially collapsed lung.

BRISBANE 13.19 (97) defeated SYDNEY 12.9 (81)
Chris Fagan summed it up when he said the Lions “found a way to win but it should have been a bit easier.” Poor goal-kicking was largely to blame as Brisbane wasted its territorial dominance, booting 6.14 after half-time. Lachie Neale (29 disposals, 10 clearances, seven tackles) and Zac Bailey (26 touches, two goals) starred for the home side with Josh Dunkley, Will Ashcroft and Keidean Coleman also prominent. Father-son recruit Jaspa Fletcher showed glimpses of promise with 13 touches and a classy goal. Luke Parker (24 disposals, 10 clearances, one goal) and Errol Gulden (27, four, two) fought hard for the Swans.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY 16.10 (106) defeated FREMANTLE 5.6 (36)
The Dockers put in their worst performance of the season with everything to play for as Adam Kingsley found some of the irresistible ‘Orange Tsunami’ that he’s been seeking to reignite. Jake Riccardi kicked five goals in Jesse Hogan’s absence and Toby Greene booted four as GWS posted a triple-figure score for the third straight week. Josh Kelly (33 disposals, three goals) starred for the home side on his return, while Tom Green (31 touches, six clearances) and Stephen Coniglio (31, six) also had a say as GWS controlled the stoppages. Caleb Serong (32 disposals, four clearances, one goal) was one of few Fremantle players who could hold their heads high.

RICHMOND 13.12 (90) defeated ST KILDA 11.4 (70)
Tim Taranto (38 touches, one goal) and Shai Bolton (18, three) shone for Richmond and Trent Cotchin (29, two) wound back the clock in his 300th game, celebrating in style as the Tigers made it three wins on the bounce. Caretaker coach Andrew McQualter got one over his old mentor Ross Lyon, who was left to lament his Saints blowing a string of chances late in the game. They managed just one behind in the final term before Taranto and Bolton shut the gate with the last two goals. Nick Vlastuin was important for Richmond with a game-high 11 intercepts, 23 disposals and a goal, as were Dustin Martin (35 touches, six clearances) and Jayden Short (23 touches, two goals). Jack Sinclair (31 disposals, seven clearances), Brad Crouch (33, five) and Dan Butler (three goals) were among St Kilda’s best.

CARLTON 18.12 (120) defeated GOLD COAST 8.13 (61)
There were no boos for the Blues this week – at least not after quarter-time – as Michael Voss’ men piled on nine second-quarter goals in a demolition job that set up their much-needed victory. Harry McKay booted three goals in his 100th game and captain Patrick Cripps led from the front with 27 disposals, seven clearances and three goals. Sam Docherty (32), Matt Kennedy (27), Adam Cerra (27), Sam Walsh (29) and Cripps dominated the midfield battle at the feet of influential ruckman Tom De Koning. Ben Ainsworth (22 disposals, two goals) and Matt Rowell (21 touches, five clearances) fought a losing battle for the Suns. It was Carlton’s second win since March and just their second of the year against a rival that is in the finals conversation.

NORTH MELBOURNE 13.6 (84) lost to WESTERN BULLDOGS 15.15 (105)
Cody Weightman kicked a career-best six goals and took a huge grab on Griffin Logue’s back to help the Dogs snap a three-match losing streak. The victory solidified their spot in the top eight but came at a cost as key defenders Liam Jones (forearm) and Tim O’Brien (hamstring) went down with injuries in the first half. Aaron Naughton kicked two goals before moving into defence. Marcus Bontempelli (32 disposals, 11 tackles, eight clearances, three goals), Tom Liberatore (27 touches, nine tackles, eight clearances), Adam Treloar (34 touches, seven clearances, one goal) and ruckman Tim English (24 possessions, six clearances, one goal) were outstanding. Harry Sheezel (32 disposals, five clearances) was the pick of North’s youngsters, while Nick Larkey and Jaidyn Stephenson finished with three goals each.
