The Trades – Day 10: Big names, new homes in frantic finale

Wednesday was billed as a blockbuster final day of AFL trading, and it certainly didn’t disappoint as 17 deals were completed and some of the game’s biggest names found new homes in a frantic nine-hour period.

Day 10 started with a bang as Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard finally made his way to Hawthorn, along with a future third-round pick, in exchange for Hawks youngster Ryan Burton, pick 15, 35 and a future fourth-round pick.

Soon after, dual Fremantle best-and-fairest Lachie Neale got his wish and, along with pick 30, was traded to Brisbane in exchange for picks six, 19 and 55.

Then it was the Dockers’ turn to get something big and, after years of pursuit, they finally got their hands on Melbourne key forward Jesse Hogan, as well as pick 65, in exchange for picks six and 23 – in the process confirming that they were bluffing last week when they said they pulled out of the running for Hogan.

After years of crying out for a genuinely talented key forward tandem, Freo made their wishes finally come true with the next trade by also securing Rory Lobb from GWS. The Dockers also received picks 14, 43 and 47 in return for picks 11 and 19 as part of the deal.

Gold Coast co-captain Steven May was the next cab off the rank as he joined Suns teammate Kade Kolodjashnij on the way to Melbourne, while the expansion club received the pick six that Dees were given as part of the Hogan deal.

As far as the blockbuster deals were concerned, a huge lull then gripped the final day and the drama (whether contrived or not by the AFL and Foxtel to build suspense for the first-ever TV prime time deadline of 8.30pm) became palpable.

The deals surrounding Dylan Shiel and Dayne Beams appeared to stall dramatically while Tim Kelly’s wishes to be traded to West Coast were ultimately denied and he now has to reconcile the fact that he will spend another season at Geelong.

Essendon and Collingwood fans had to wait until the final 20 minutes of the 10-day trade period before finally having their dreams confirmed as their clubs secured the services of GWS jet Dylan Shiel and Brisbane star Dayne Beams respectively.

Shiel and a future second-round pick made their way to Tullamarine while the Giants received pick nine and a future first-round pick in return.

For Beams it is a homecoming as he returns to the club he previously played six seasons with, including the 2010 premiership. The Magpies also obtained picks 41 and 44 from the Lions while parting ways with pick 18, 56 and a future first-round pick.

In other trades, Sydney acquired Jackson Thurlow from Geelong, premiership Bulldog Jordan Roughead was nabbed by Collingwood, Sam Mayes made his way to Port Adelaide from Brisbane, Essendon speedster Travis Colyer crossed to Fremantle, Jack Hombsch joined Gold Coast from Port Adelaide, Swans defender Nic Newman was traded to Carlton and Bulldogs defender Marcus Adams made his way to the Lions.

Some pick swaps also took place as Brisbane traded a future first-round pick to Gold Coast in exchange for pick 19, a future second-round pick and a future third-round pick, North Melbourne traded pick 31 to Fremantle in exchange for picks 47, 49 and 55 and St Kilda traded pick 28 to Melbourne in exchange for picks 36 and 46.

In all, a huge collection of 42 players found new homes in the 2018 free agency/trade period.
