Noting the VFL debut of Nicky Winmar for St Kilda in a pre-season game in the footy flashbacks, I thought you might be interested in this is a pretty good blast from the WAFL past featuring a young Nicky Winmar who kicks 3 last quarter goals in his 2nd game for Sth Fremantle playing in a derby at East Fremantle Oval.
Fast open end to end play which was the contrasting style of WA football played on still hard grounds in the winter of 1983 with a thilling after the siren conclusion. As mentioned by the commentators the game was played on a Monday Foundation day holiday in WA featuring some players who also played 2 days earlier in a Saturday state game. eg: Stepen Michael/Paul Harding in the ruck. Commentator George Grljusich is calling his son Rod and trying to be even handed about the umpiring but when it comes to the crunch – its always South that are getting rough end of the pineapple. Also seen in the vision is East Frem no 1, Roger Kerr – father of Samantha/Daniel. Other notable players who would go on to play VFL include Brad Hardie, Michael Brennan, Peter Wilson, Rod Lester-Smith, Murray Wrensted,
Sth Fremantle are on the precipe of a decline despite their top of the ladder position while East Fremantle are the team on the rise in the next couple of seasons. Some of Souths great players such as Maurice Rioli, Joe McKay, Basil Campbell have already moved on and stalwarts such as the Tasmanian/Richmond star Noel Carter, and Bruce Monteath are near the end of their career as well. The departure of Hardie and coach Malcolm Brown still to come. You do get glimpses of two of the truly amazing South Fremantle indigenous footballers of the era – the super talented St Mary’s footballer Benny Vigona and the equally brilliant if truly enigmatic Willie Roe.
