Hi Rohan and Mark,
I’m sorry but I couldn’t find the link for this weeks competition. I’m not even sure if this qualifies but please indulge me for one minute as I briefly describe one of the strangest, most exciting state game of football never witnessed. It was played in 1988 in Vancouver, Canada between a WA side ravaged by the entry of the West Coast Eagles the previous year and a near Adelaide Crows strength SA team. It was played under the roof (way before docklands existed) in a NFL sized stadium. The reduced size of the field meant the teams were reduced to 15 players aside. The artificial surface forced all players to wear knee pads. The game is very fast and free flowing and exciting. Some of the kicks easy cover 65m under the roof (especially from Craig ‘boofy’ Edwards from WA).
As a side note my brother worked with Todd Breman (former West Coast and Richmond utility). He said the SA team was very arrogant and barely gave the ‘weak’ WA team the time of day. This galvanised the WA team who were very long odds to pull this one off. This game was taken very seriously and the final few minutes was breathtaking, it took Subiaco defender Rod ‘spinner’ willett to put WA in front and the climax reaches fever pitch in front of a now raucous Canadian crowd who have warmed to the ‘Sandgropers’. The reduced size of the field meant the teams were reduced to 15 players aside. The artificial surface forced all players to wear knee pads. The game is very fast and free flowing and future Adelaide Crows inaugaral captain Chris McDermott suffered a serious knee injury during this game. Manic commentary by SA Ken ‘strike me pink’ Cunningham greatly amuses his Canadian counterpart who is amazed at this incredible game called Aussie Rules
If you watch the introduction you will get an idea how incredible this forgotten game really was…if you watch from 1hr 51min you will catch the incredible finish and a ‘strike me pink’ from Ken Cunningham which he repeated at least ten times throughout the call.

WA were ecstatic and the croweaters gutted by this result. It’s still one of my favorite matches.
