The Penrith Panthers are seeking to become NRL premiers for a third consecutive year

As always seems to be the case these days, the year is hurtling along at some pace and we already find ourselves more than a third of the way through 2023.

But there’s still plenty to come in the months ahead, with sports fans in particular set to be treated to some outstanding action right here in Australia.

Here are some of the picks of the sporting schedule yet to come in 2023:

MELBOURNE CUP
It’s the horse race that ‘stops a nation’. On November 7, Australia will grind to a halt for the Melbourne Cup once more.

Flemington Racecourse will be the host once more as the best-thoroughbred horses in the business do battle over the 3,200 distance – all aiming to win their share of the $8 million AUD purse. Nice work if you can get it!

AFL GRAND FINAL
It’s a date that footy fans across the land will already have scorched into their minds: the AFL Grand Final at the MCG on September 30.

Will defending champions Geelong recover from their slow start to the 2023 campaign? Will Melbourne and Collingwood continue their fine form? Could St Kilda or Essendon be the premiers for the first time in more than a decade?

All of these questions will be answered in the months ahead, before the AFL champion for 2023 is crowned in front of 100,000 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

WOMEN’S SOCCER WORLD CUP

Australia and New Zealand have been chosen to host the Women’s Soccer World Cup, which is set to be the biggest and arguably the best edition yet thanks to the expanded 32-team format.

Soccer lovers will be able to take in games in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane, with ticket information available at this site: fifa.com for the games played throughout July and August.

Will Sam Kerr lead the Matildas to glory on home soil?

NRL GRAND FINAL

Can anybody stop the Penrith Panthers?

The answer will be revealed at the culmination of another hectic NRL season, with the Grand Final scheduled for October 1.

The Panthers are seeking to become NRL premiers for a third consecutive year, but will face stiff competition from Sydney Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs and perhaps even the resurgent Brisbane Broncos, who have won seven of their first eight regular season games.

AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN

You can see a full list of fixtures at this site: cricket.com.au, but sadly you won’t get to see Australia men’s team play test cricket on Aussie soil until December, when they embark on a series against the ever-mercurial Pakistan.

Before then, there’s the small matter of the Ashes, the ICC Test Championship final against India and the ODI World Cup.

Even as 2023 rockets by, there’s still plenty of sporting action to look forward to.
