It is that time of the year again when AFL clubs reflect on the season just completed and crown their newest best-and-fairest winners.

Club champions have now been announced for all 18 clubs, and while there are plenty of fresh faces who have clinched the top honour for their respective clubs, there was also a smattering of familiar names who came out on top.

Out west, Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli further pressed his claim for his club’s greatest ever player when he collected his sixth Charles Sutton Medal.

The astonishing accomplishment drew him level with another club legend Gary Dempsey and he is now just one behind Scott West who holds the all-time record at the Bulldogs with seven.

It was a familiar story at Princes Park as Carlton champion Patrick Cripps claimed a record-equalling fifth John Nicholls Medal, which saw him catch Nicholls himself. The pair are the only men to win five Carlton best-and-fairests.

It capped off an unforgettable year for Cripps who won his second Brownlow Medal with an eye-watering 45 votes, smashing the previous record (36) in the process.

Meanwhile, Essendon captain Zach Merrett confirmed his status as one of the Bombers’ best ever with a fifth Crichton Medal, which drew him level with the great James Hird. Only legendary duo Dick Reynolds and Bill Hutchison are ahead of Merrett on seven medals each.

And Brisbane superstar Lachie Neale won his sixth best-and-fairest overall, after winning two at Fremantle.
