(From left): Rory Lobb, Jonathon Ceglar and Peter Ladhams could all still move clubs in the last 48 hours of AFL trade period.

With approximately 48 hours remaining, the 2021 AFL trade period looks set for an action-packed last couple of days.

The likes of Jordan Dawson, Rory Lobb, Jordan Clark, Peter Ladhams and Jonathon Ceglar are still to get to their destinations of choice, while speculation continues to surround star Hawthorn quartet Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara, Chad Wingard and Jack Gunston.

It was revealed on Monday that the Giants were interested in bringing Wingard to his third club, but with two years still to run on his contract at Waverley Park, the former Power star reiterated he wasn’t keen on budging.

The haggling over the Dawson deal between Adelaide and Sydney dragged on into a second week, with yet another revised offer being tabled, this time the Crows reportedly putting up their future first-round pick gained recently from Melbourne.

But considering the Demons are the premiership favourite for 2022, it looks set to be a selection somewhere in the late teens. Whether that will be enough to convince the Swans to finally let go of a player they rate so highly is the question.

And Lobb’s mission to become a Giant again has stalled, so much so that his manager Colin Young declared it dead in the water.

“We exhausted all avenues to try and assist GWS facilitate this trade in which we believe all parties would benefit in the long run,” Young told AFL Media. “I advised all parties at 7.30pm Sunday evening by e-mail that this trade would not get off the ground so we should all move on.”

Whether Young actually means what he’s saying or he’s just foxing on behalf of his client remains to be seen.

But the Dockers have maintained that they were unlikely to give up Lobb. Not only does he still have two years to run on his contract worth an estimated $1.4 million, but given he’s 206 centimetres, he would be basically irreplaceable in their forward line.

GWS wants Fremantle to pay a portion of Lobb’s wages if he was to move back to his old club as well, something the Dockers aren’t keen on doing either.

Other players such as Sam Powell-Pepper, Mitch Wallis, Jake Melksham, Mason Cox, Trent Dumont, Jarrod Brander, Darcy Fort, Tristan Xerri and Max Lynch have also been thrown up in trade discussions.

However, Powell-Pepper will almost certainly stay at Port Adelaide while Wallis seems like signing a new deal with the Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, not much headway has been made in Bobby Hill’s desired move to Essendon. The GWS forward declared the Bombers as the team he wants to play for in 2022, despite still having a year to run on his contract with the Giants.

And, as expected, Ladhams has nominated Sydney as his club of choice for next season. The Port Adelaide ruckman wants more game time, having remained stuck behind Scott Lycett in the ruck pecking order at the Power.

Just one deal was completed on day eight of the trade period, and it saw talented Bulldogs youngster Patrick Lipinski join Collingwood in exchange for the Pies’ pick 43.

The 23-year-old showed potential in his 56 games over five years with the Dogs, but with his old club boasting one of the most stacked midfields in the competition, it made opportunities hard to come by.

After playing nine of the first 11 games in the 2021 season, he managed only two more and played no part in the Bulldogs’ finals series.

He has a career average of 17 disposals, but considering two of his five biggest hauls (32 – a personal best – and 26) were achieved against the Magpies, it’s little wonder Collingwood was so keen to secure him.

“I have a lot of friends and people at the Bulldogs I will always be grateful to. I got my chance there,” Lipinski said. “To evolve and build on the foundations of my game, though, I know moving to Collingwood is the right thing.

“It’s the right fit. There is something of a new beginning taking place at the Pies, with a relatively young list and new coaching staff. I’m keen to share in that.”

In other news, the Herald Sun has reported that former Adelaide and Richmond small forward Tyson Stengle will join Geelong as a delisted free agent.
