To say Monday was moving day of the 2022 AFL trade period would be a gross understatement.

The big dominoes fell left, right and centre, starting with Melbourne premiership ruckman Luke Jackson who finally made his way to Fremantle, along with picks 44 and 67, in exchange for pick 13, a future first- and future second-round pick.

Prior to that deal, the Demons obtained pick 44 from the Giants in exchange for small forward Toby Bedford.

Then Gold Coast excitement machine Izak Rankine made his way to Adelaide, as well as pick 46 and a future fourth-rounder, in exchange for the Crows’ pick No.5, future third- and future fourth-round picks.

But that wasn’t the end of it. Just when you thought the much talked about “mega deal” was dead in the water, like Frankenstein’s monster, it rose from its inanimate state and wreaked havoc across the league.

This four-club monstrosity saw Port Adelaide receive disgruntled former No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis and a future third-round pick from North Melbourne, Junior Rioli from West Coast and a future second-round pick from GWS.

The Giants received pick No.1 from the Kangaroos, as well as picks 53 and 57 from the Power.

The Eagles got pick No.8, a future second- and future third-round pick from Port Adelaide, as well as pick 12 from GWS.

And North Melbourne obtained pick No.2 and 40 from West Coast, pick No.3 from GWS, as well as pick 43 and a future first-round pick from Port Adelaide.

The day’s other trade saw Carlton’s Will Setterfield join his third club as the former Giant and pick 68 were traded to Essendon in exchange for a future fourth-round pick to the Blues.

Fremantle’s head of player personnel David Walls said Jackson had been the Dockers’ “No.1 priority all year”.

“He’s got so much versatility and so much scope to improve as a player. We’re really only scratching the surface with what he can do,” Walls said.

“He’s only just turned 21, when you look at what he’s doing with his relative age rating for a player in his position, he’s off the charts.

“In his draft year, we had him rated at number one in the draft.

“Even though we also picked up Hayden Young and Caleb Serong, with Luke being local, we’ve followed him for a long time going back to his juniors.

“To be able to bring someone as rare as him with so much talent and character, we’re just thrilled.”

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said the Crows were also “thrilled” to acquire Rankine.

“Izak is a highly-talented footballer with great foot speed, is dangerous around goal and has tremendous game sense,” Reid said.

“We are very pleased that he wants to be part of what we are building at the club.

“We can’t wait to welcome Izak to the club as he begins pre-season training with his new teammates and gets to play in front of our passionate members and fans at Adelaide Oval.”

Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps said Horne-Francis would complement the Power’s midfield group which already contains the likes of Ollie Wines, Travis Boak, Connor Rozee and Sam Powell-Pepper.

“He is competitive and aggressive, and we like his power and explosiveness as well as his ability to go forward and hit the scoreboard,” Cripps said.

“Once Jason indicated a desire to be traded to our club, we explored a range of options to satisfy North Melbourne and ensure he would be a Port Adelaide player in 2023, and we are thrilled to welcome him to Alberton.”

Cripps was also pleased to add Rioli to the club’s ranks and is confident the 2018 Eagles premiership player will strengthen their forward line.

Meanwhile, Magpies ruckman Brodie Grundy should be wearing Melbourne colours by Wednesday night, Collingwood are zeroing in on Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell, Essendon remain in the hunt for Melbourne forward Sam Weideman, Bombers defender Aaron Francis looks on track to join Sydney, big Cat Esava Ratugolea is inching closer to Port Adelaide and Gold Coast midfielder Jack Bowes (and pick seven) are destined for Geelong.

But the stalemate between the Bulldogs and Brisbane over Josh Dunkley remains unresolved, and Collingwood forward Oliver Henry is no closer to realising his dream of crossing to Geelong.
