If you thought day six of the 2022 AFL trade period was action-packed, then Tuesday would have knocked you off your feet.

The big moves continued to be made on day seven, with five more players finding new homes, bring this year’s trade/free agency period total to a whopping 25.

The biggest domino to fall was that of Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy who finally made his way to Melbourne in exchange for pick 27.

The Brisbane Lions also secured one of their two main targets by acquiring Hawthorn sharpshooter Jack Gunston in exchange for pick 48 and a future fourth-round pick. Brisbane’s attention now turns to star Bulldogs on-baller Josh Dunkley.

But the high-profile movements didn’t stop there, with gun GWS midfielder Jacob Hopper crossing to Richmond late in the day, following in the footsteps of former teammate Tim Taranto in the process.

The Tigers parted with pick 31 and a future first-rounder to secure Hopper, and received picks 54 and 63 back the other way.

Meanwhile, the infamous “salary dump” deal was also confirmed as reigning premier Geelong got its hands on Gold Coast midfielder Jack Bowes, as well as pick seven, for the measly price of a 2023 third-round pick.

The day’s other deal saw Adelaide big man Billy Frampton head to Collingwood in exchange for a future third-round selection.

It’s fair to say that Grundy had mixed feelings joining the Demons after just two seasons into his seven-year deal with Collingwood, but the dual All-Australian has accepted his fate and was already looking forward.

“When I signed my contract in 2020, my dream was to be a Pie for life,” Grundy said on social media.

“My desire to remain at Collingwood did not change this year. However, after recent conversations with the club, this dream could no longer be a reality.

“Signing with Melbourne Football Club today, I am deeply committed to my new club. I’m looking forward to the contribution I can make to Melbourne and their fans in 2023 and beyond.

“Time to dream a different dream and get to work ahead of the season.”

As expected, the Magpies will pay a portion of Grundy’s salary, just like they are doing with Adam Treloar at the Western Bulldogs.

After winning three flags in a decorated career with Hawthorn, Gunston said he was looking forward to being part of the Lions’ “really strong culture”.

“I am very excited to be joining a young group who are continually every year on the rise and ready for some success,” Gunston said.

“I cannot wait to meet everyone associated with the Brisbane Lions and getting up to Queensland to begin the next part of my footballing story.”

Richmond talent manager Blair Hartley said 25-year-old Hopper’s best footy was “yet to come”.

“Jacob has a skillset that we know can help us across the coming years, so it is very exciting to secure this trade with the Giants,” Hartley said.

“We look forward to him continuing to build off the outstanding seasons of AFL football he has already put together.

“We thank GWS for their cooperation in facilitating Jacob’s request to return to Victoria, where he completed his studies, and are pleased to have been able to find a suitable trade that benefits both parties.”

But with approximately 24 hours left in the trade period, there are still plenty of potential deals still yet to be completed, which should make for a blockbuster finale on Wednesday.

With the likes of Dunkley, Rory Lobb, Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara, Esava Ratugolea, Oliver Henry, Sam Weideman, Aaron Francis and Lloyd Meek still yet to find new homes, chaos looms as the order of the day.

The trade deadline is 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Sydney defender Harry Cunningham has committed his future to the Swans by signing a new two-year deal.
