(From left): In late trading, Jordan Clark became a Docker, Jonathon Ceglar a Cat, and Darcy Fort a Lion

Geelong was at the centre of a final-hour flurry as the AFL trade period closed on Wednesday night, gaining a rival’s ruckman but losing two of its own players.

A lack of overall action in previous days was suspected by many to be the calm before the storm, but there were doubts over whether the trade downpour would ever arrive.

After Sydney’s Jordan Dawson has his move to Adelaide approved early in the day, Geelong’s Darcy Fort was the next to go, with the ruckman and pick 41 sent to Brisbane in exchange for pick 50 and a future third-round pick.

The Cats then sent that future pick to Hawthorn, receiving Jonathon Ceglar and a future fourth-round pick in exchange. Ceglar, a 30-year-old ruckman, signed a two-year contract with Geelong after playing 101 games for the Hawks.

The ruck merry-go-round continued when Collingwood’s Max Lynch got his wish, being sent to Hawthorn. Collingwood received two future third-round selections – one tied to Brisbane and one tied to the Hawks – in exchange for Lynch, and two of its future picks: one third-rounder tied to Fremantle and one fourth-rounder tied to Gold Coast.

Jordan Clark joined Fort in leaving Geelong half an hour before the deadline, with the winger getting his desired move to Fremantle. The Dockers also received the Cats’ future fourth-round pick, sending pick 22 and a future third-round pick to Kardinia Park in exchange.

Peter Ladhams was the last player to make a switch in clubs; the young Port Adelaide ruckman is now a Sydney player after he and pick 16 moved to the harbour city in exchange for a first-round pick and a future third-round selection.

As always though, not all wantaway players got their moves.

GWS forward Bobby Hill’s requested trade to Essendon stalled after the Giants rejected a future second round pick in exchange, and negotiations never restarted.

Hill’s manager Colin Young said Hill was uninterested in returning to the Giants, according to AFL Media.

“[Young] is adamant that Bobby Hill is not wanting to go back to GWS even if a deal can’t be struck,” Callum Twomey told AFL Trade Radio around two hours before the deadline.

The Giants had interest in Hawthorn’s Luke Breust as a small forward replacement for Hill, but Breust, who has two years left on his contract, was unwilling to move.

Hill and his pregnant partner wanted a move to Victoria for family reasons; Hill’s cousin Bradley who plays for St Kilda.

Another contracted player, North Melbourne’s Tristan Xerri, didn’t get his request to be a Saint fulfilled after St Kilda’s offered of a future third-round pick wasn’t deemed enough by the Roos.

The contracted ruckman has played 12 games in his four seasons at Arden Street.
